Rebels' season 3 Finale has debuted, along with the corresponding Rebels Recon on Starwars.com where Kilian Plunkett, my Art Director, mentioned some of the challenges of creating the Rebels version of the Death Trooper who also appeared in Rogue One. It was a challenge, to be sure, and it's a lot of fun to see these guys on screen! Here is a piece of the design sheet that appears on the Rebels finale episode guide. David Bowie has passed beyond this earth, and it seems like the world is...less. I was tremendously inspired by his work. So much has been said about him by so many, and so eloquently, that it is probably best if I just let their words stand instead of trying to come up with something. Here is a small tribute I did in pencil in my sketchbook.JPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16154221659331681868noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29743711.post-50174579476961695322015-12-28T19:32:00.003-08:002015-12-28T19:32:43.308-08:00GAP Lady<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here is a small gouache painting I did based on a woman I saw waiting by some denim shirts in front of the dressing room at a GAP during the holiday shopping season. Originally, she was more forlorn that this woman looks, and had a much smaller hairdo, but the painting evolved into something else as it progressed. I didn't have a photo and I wanted to get some mileage with the new travel brush my brother got me for Christmas, so this is the result. Hopefully I can get a few more studies and paintings done in the next several weeks before I begin work on a new project.<br />

I didn't get very far before other things took precedent. The idea won't die, so I will reboot it; it will be a clean start.<br />
<br />
I am not a writer, and I feel like my Illustration skills need some spit and polish (elbow grease might be more like it...) so I will approach this project with the hopes of simply getting better, and perhaps finding more of a personal voice. I want to, by the end of this, grow better at telling and illustrating whole stories, even if only by a small margin. I can't commit to any firm updates, but I plan to stick with it and see where it takes me.JPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16154221659331681868noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29743711.post-72929622249191307382015-10-26T02:14:00.000-07:002015-10-26T02:32:27.883-07:00Rassum Frassum...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

There's not a lot of deep thought to this image except I wanted to try to get the feeling I get from Trump in a sort of abstract, off the cuff manner. I was going to do a much more labor intensive illustration but realized that I didn't want to spend a lot of time looking at his face. I also included the "post consumer content" that was on the envelope I sketched on because it seemed appropriate. This started as a postage-stamp sized sketch in my sketchbook, then I did a quick color pass in photoshop, then I used a cool glitch web tool off of github.JPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16154221659331681868noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29743711.post-40080110554562236952015-07-05T20:56:00.001-07:002015-07-05T20:56:26.389-07:00Le Lumbersexual<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

During my commute today there was a woman with an over-sized windbreaker in a car at a four way stop next to the Golden Gate bridge. She had a super-intense stare. Her look was pretty bold, so I did a sketch from memory.JPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16154221659331681868noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29743711.post-64201734763171181542015-05-13T18:46:00.001-07:002015-05-13T18:46:43.196-07:00NYC Spring 2015<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I haven't put up pictures in a while, so here are some new ones. I took a trip to New York with my wife for our 5 year anniversary. We planned on just hanging out in neighborhoods and parks and not worry about hitting tourist stuff since we had both been to the city before. Nevertheless, we ended up getting our fair share of tourism in, and it was all a blast.JPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16154221659331681868noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29743711.post-69874348264411466922015-05-12T17:35:00.000-07:002015-05-12T17:35:07.945-07:00Last of the Princes of the Apocalypse Sketches<br />

Here are the last of the Princes of the Apocalypse concept sketches I did. There are lots of drawings that were done, but I'll just stick with what has been released.<br />
<br />
These sketches were one of the last briefs I received before returning to Lucasfilm full-time. I was briefed with designing a character for each of the elements as well as their signature weapon. The finish level was, again, supposed to be very rough; only an indication of what the character should be. Some of them turned out better than others, but they were fun to create nonetheless!JPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16154221659331681868noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29743711.post-71116501351591518632015-04-29T11:24:00.001-07:002015-04-29T11:24:43.503-07:00Blast from the Past: Clone Wars Concept Art<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
There was a panel at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim where some previously unseen concept art for the Clone Wars was revealed. I had a couple images in the slideshow. It was good to see the unused Ahsoka design; her post padawan getup was a fun challenge.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The outfit ended up very eclectic. I even got to do a Kaminoan tribute to Hokusai on the arm band callout and a wolf-themed knife. I had no idea what a Star Wars knife was supposed to look like, so that took some tinkering.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What can I say about the Padme ship nose art? When I read in the script that the Bad Batch Clone Troopers had it on their ship and that Anakin would see it, I cracked up. I'm sorry the episodes were never finished, but the work lives on. Much more concept work from my wonderful design friends is on the <a href="http://www.starwars.com/tv-shows/the-clone-wars-legacy" target="_blank">StarWars.com </a>website. Check it out!</div>

A while back I was lucky enough to be part of the early concept phase. This was one of my favorite jobs because there was a real sense of collaboration: I would send off drawings, some of them would spark ideas with the game designers, and they would send more ideas that forked to new paths neither party had expected. Many times the art direction was, "come up with something cool."<br />
<br />
I thought none of this art would see the light of day because it was very run-and-gun. There was little time to draw the concepts, and the finish level was supposed to be rough; just enough to show the designers the idea and give the illustrator responsible for final interior book art a visual target.<br />
<br />
I was pleased to see that the afterword has some of my sketches. It makes me smile, but it's a bit embarrassing, as some of that stuff...oof. Definitely not gonna win any awards.<br />
<br />
In any case, it was a pleasure to work with Wizards on Princes of the Apocalypse, and I hope everyone who plays the game has as much fun playing as I did drawing.<br />

I was showing an intern how to quickly create variants based on zbrush sculpts today, and he mentioned not having zbrush. I said, "you should download sculptris. It's free, and it can get you pretty far with just a quick sculpt screen shot and a photo."<br />
<br />
"Really? What do you mean?"<br />
<br />
I spent the next two minutes busting out a quick sculpt. It was super gross, but had enough to set up a base for a photo set on "overlay" blending mode. I spent about another minute looking for the photo, one that would fit the angle of the sculpt with a little nudging. This is, of course, no secret to many working concept artists and students, but what the intern said after I overlaid an ape over the sculpt was:<br />
<br />
"Well, if it's that easy it takes a lot of the magic away."<br />
<br />
I feel very much the same, but in an industry such as entertainment, where time is money, there is no faster way to knock out an idea that doesn't look "hand drawn."JPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16154221659331681868noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29743711.post-6074242325068231902015-02-07T20:38:00.000-08:002015-02-07T20:38:41.012-08:00Lara Croft<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Thanks to Derick Tsai, I had a chance last year to work with Magnus Rex on some fun Tomb Raider stuff. Here is a sketch that was apparently used for a cinematic of some kind, although I haven't seen the finished product.JPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16154221659331681868noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29743711.post-29000667885760217682014-11-17T02:27:00.000-08:002014-11-17T02:27:12.978-08:00Popcorn Madam<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This woman was in the theater when I went to see <i>Gone Girl</i> some time ago. I wanted to do a sketch of her, and since I haven't posted here in a while, here she is.<br />

I am posting pieces to a story series on my facebook page, but I will post all of them in a collected post here when I am done. Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later!<br />

Last year I was fortunate enough to work on three illustrations for the new Monster Manual. I was originally working with Jon Schindehette and then transitioned to Daniel Gelon as art director. I very much enjoyed working with both men, and I thank them immensely for allowing me to be a part of this new addition to the D&D franchise!<br />
<br />
The three creatures I worked on were the Blue Dragon, the Behir, and the Storm Giant. I just received my copy of the book in the mail. There is a ton of cool stuff in there, so if you like monsters (and their attacks, history, etc) this is a great resource. If you play D&D, you probably already have it ;)JPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16154221659331681868noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29743711.post-67895824310498520302014-09-21T01:42:00.004-07:002014-09-21T01:42:55.346-07:00Free Fallin'<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
